Opal Lee, a Black activist, envisioned Juneteenth as a holiday for all to celebrate. This inspiring true story showcases the joy within the Black community and encourages children to nurture their dreams. Growing up in Texas, Opal was aware of the significance of Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the day in 1865 when news of President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation finally reached Texas, over two years after its initial declaration. However, Opal discovered that many Americans were unfamiliar with this holiday. Join Opal on her historic journey to acknowledge and honor "freedom for all."
Every year, Opal eagerly anticipated the Juneteenth picnic, a festive event filled with drumming, dancing, and delicious food. Through her grandfather Zak's stories, she understood the historical importance of Juneteenth. Sadly, Opal didn't always witness freedom in her own Texas town. When she was twelve years old, her brand-new home was burned down by an angry mob on Juneteenth. This act of hatred shattered Opal's perception of freedom. Determined to take action, she questioned whether her voice could truly make a difference. Could Opal rally for national recognition of Juneteenth? Follow her courageous journey as she fights to shape a brighter future while honoring the past.
